Technology Trends In Commercial Construction 

The construction industry is seeing a shift in technological developments, keeping in line with trends in other industries such as Healthtech, Climate Tech, Fintech and more.  

The pace of technological change means that there is always something new to discover and explore and there are several leading technologies that are being implemented in commercial construction.

Here are a few examples: 

  1. Building Information Modelling (BIM): BIM is a 3D modelling software that allows architects and engineers to create a digital representation of a building. This technology helps to optimize design, construction, and operation of a building. Our construction partner, Foster Construction use BIM in some of their construction projects, including the Waikato Regional Theatre. 

  2. Prefabrication and Modular Construction: Prefabrication involves constructing building components off-site, and then assembling them on-site. This method can save time and labour costs, while also reducing waste. 

  3. Drones: Drones are being used in commercial construction for surveying, inspecting, and monitoring construction sites. They can be used to capture aerial images, create 3D models, and even transport materials. 

  4. Robotics and Automation: Robotics and automation are being used to increase efficiency and productivity in commercial construction. Robots can be used for tasks such as bricklaying, concrete pouring, and painting. While the use of robots in the construction industry is growing, it is still relatively uncommon compared to other industries such as manufacturing or logistics – and very rare in New Zealand. However, the adoption of robots in construction is expected to increase in the coming years as technology continues to advance and the benefits become more widely recognized. One of the main barriers to the widespread adoption of robots in construction is the cost, as many robotic systems can be expensive to implement and maintain. Additionally, construction sites can be complex and unpredictable, making it difficult to design robots that can operate effectively in these environments. 

  5. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR): AR and VR technologies are being used to visualize building designs, simulate construction processes, and train workers. This can help to improve safety and reduce errors during construction.  

  6. Sustainable Materials: There is a growing interest in sustainable construction materials, such as engineered wood products, recycled materials, and green concrete. These materials can reduce the environmental impact of commercial construction and improve energy efficiency. As we have mentioned in previous articles, technology like CLT (compressed linear timber) is starting to replace steel - even in larger buildings. NZ Company RegStag have recognised this with significant investment in their Rotorua CLT plant, as this trend continues to grow. 

Overall, these new technologies are helping to transform the commercial construction industry, making it more efficient, sustainable, and safe.
